Welsh Championships

Seven swimmers travelled to Swansea for the Welsh National Championships over the Easter weekend .

Leah Cooper, punched well above her weight in all her events but particularly so in the Girls 12/13 years 400m freestyle, a new event for Leah. She produced an awesome 14s personal best winning her heat and finishing 10th & not content with one outstanding performance, it was a story she repeated in the 200m free.

Hannah Knightly put in an extremely gutsy performance in the Girls 12/13 years 1,500m freestyle taking 4 sec off her pervious best time, finishing 5th overall. This extremely good result sets Hannah up nicely for the Stockport Metro Open Meet coming up in April where she will go over her favoured distance, the 800m Free. Hannah is really looking forward this particularly as she split a 6 sec PB @ the 800m stage of her 1,500m championship swim.

Roy Sterling, despite prolonged injury this season, still had an outstanding Meet making several finals with hugely gutsy performances in his favoured events the 100/200m breaststroke. Unfortunately he had to withdraw from the 800m freestyle due to a persistent injury.

Cam Bell, is back in harness, and racing very well indeed after a year of uncertainty in the competition arena due to prolonged and reoccurring injury. Cam produced 4 very pleasing PBs out of 5 splashes.

Nathan Edward-Hughes(15) swimming out of age, was in extremely good form at this stage of the season, and he too punched well above his weight making several finals and posting many life time best performances, most notably the 100m fly where his time dropped  a staggering 2+ sec. which was enought to win the "B" final of the boys 15/16 100m fly event

Rob Parry was also in fine form producing several PBs and 3 championship records. Rob is now looking forward to travelling to California to compete as part of the Welsh Elite contingent in May and he now has his sights firmly fixed on the world swimming stage.

Brad Carnell also produced creditable performances in his 100/200m breaststroke events and he now has his sights on his first North Wales 'cap" in April.

Team achievements were 26 personal best times, 21 finals & 3 Championship Records

North Wales Call up

Breaststroke specialist, Bradley Carnell received his first call up to represent North Wales @ the Konica Minolta Team Challenge to be held in Stockport in April

Brad will be travelling as part of a large contingent of North Wales swimmers who will be going head to head with some of the North West's top county swimmers.

Well done Brad, we all wish you the best of luck

Abergele Boy Sets New Welsh Record

Abergele's own Rob Parry (15) was in blistering form @ the Geoff Drew Swimming Meet held at Holywell Sunday 28th October, by setting a new Welsh Junior Short Course Freestyle record in 53.03s.

Entering the competition in the middle of a very heavy period of pre-season training, Parry entered the Meet with the specific purpose of having a crack at the 8 year old record previously held by one of Wales' outstanding junior sprinters; Owen Morgan who now heads up Wales'  & Britain's senior men.

Having missed out by 100th sec the day before, Parry had to raise his mental game 100%, by having a second crack at the record in the first 100m of the men's 200m freestyle event.

This was a much more difficult task, given that his rivals would be pacing out for the 200m event.

The Commonwealth Games 2010/2014 potential athlete said I am delighted to have been able to break the record, especially given that my training has been particularly heavy and that I effectively had to go it alone on the first 100m of the 200m event. That was really tough, as there was nobody to race as all the other guys were out for their respective 200m times.

I made a promise to myself and an injured school buddy that I would give it one hell of a shot, and I would like to dedicate my win to Rhys.

Sister Act 2 Are Top Girls @ Geoff Drew

Abergele youngsters were out this weekend competing in the Geoff Drew Swimming Meet @ Holywell

With inspirational performances, sisters, Anna and Leah Cooper were both in fantastic form with Anna taking top girls award in the 10 years category, and, not to be out done, elder sister Leah did the same in the 12 years old category.

Hannah Knightly also showed her steely determination in the girls 1,500m freestyle, after having already competed in the 800m event in a life time best; she went on to take a staggering 50s off her previous 1,500m best time.

Kit Pollard took a very well earned silver in the 15 years 100m butterfly and James Owen, Brad Carnel, Charlotte Riley   James Jones, Alex Jones all made and array of finals with medals galore.

Club youngsters Chloe Merrision and Kyra Davies also punched above their weight by achieving personal best times.

The girls 4 x 25m medley team (Ffion Lewis, Toni Whitney, Hannah Knightly and Leah Cooper) romped home for a very hard fought bronze medal

Rob Parry (15) swimming out of age this time stepped out of the Age Group environment to Youth competition, was the only 15 year old to make the 15/16 years 100m free final. It was extremely pleasing to note that although just outside the cut on several events he is up there with the best 15 year olds Britain.

Jamie Davies (16) swam a very creditable 50 & 100m fly.

James Owen (14) had a fantastic Welsh Summer Nationals Meet (Swansea) and he certainly produced the goods with 8 PBs and some very hard fought silver wear. James also made several qualification times for the Welsh Regional Development Squad

Nathan Hughes (14) swimming in the same Meet  also finished his season on a high by breaking the magic minute in the 100m freestyle having been knocking on the door all season.

UKSG International  - Captain's Honours for Abergele Boy

Paintballing

The troops took very well earned time out on Sunday 10th June to go paintballing.

It was an extremely hot and dusty day but the bullets were flying everywhere. Hannah Knightly  took the game to heart using over 600 rounds of ammo not sure that she was on target though....

The girls' mascara was smudged; their hair out of place  and the boys not to be out done, were sweating for Britain & covered in dust.

By the end of the morning their faces were a picuture of sheer delight. It just goes to show that the best days fun are out in the fresh air well away from play stations and MSN

Black as the ace of spades one and all, and black & blue all over they are looking forward to a repeat performance in the winter months where they will enjoy another round of team building in the mud.

Look out on the notice board for the next round every club member over the age of 12 can play.

Swim Wales Championships 2007

Abergele swimmers travelled South as part of the Club's largest contingent to the Swim Wales Championships Swansea over the Easter weekend.

16 swimmers met the qualification standards with 15 swimmers able to compete. It was extremely pleasing to see 5 swimmers ; Ffion Lewis, Hannah Knightly, James Jones, Roy Stirling and Alex Jones making the grade for the first time.

With the majority of swimmers were competing out of age, it was going to be a tough ask for the athletes. But they certainly made an impression with 21 finals places. Rob Parry (15) was in good form in a multitude of 15/16 years events - taking 5 x gold in 100m fly in a new championship record, 100 & 200m backstroke, 50 &100m free and bronze in 200m free where less than 1/10 sec separated Rob from the tow 16 year olds taking Gold and Silver.

Charlotte Riley (14) swam out of her skin to make both girls14/15 years 200m & 100m breaststroke finishing 4th and 2nd. This was Charlotte's first taste of success at a major long course meet

. Hannah Knightly was another hugely notable success story, especially when given 6 months ago, she was nowhere near the qualification standard in the girls 13u 1,500m freestyle. A gutsy performance saw her take 4 minutes off her previous best finishing a very good 9th overall. Distance swimmers

James Owen put in a huge effort in the 1,500m and 800m free finishing 4th. Fly speciallist Alex Huffen (14) despite feeling unwell, swam to a bronze medfal in 14/15 years 100m fly. With Club training partner & multi North Wales Champion, Charlotte Bryan (12) taking 2 x silver in the girls 12/13 year 100m & 200m fly.

Leah Cooper was in the form of her life delivering a fansastic PB in her favoured events 200m and 100m freestyle where she chopped her best time in the 200 event by 6 seconds and dropping 1.3 s in her favoured 100m gaining a regional qualification time for 07 - 08.

Alex Jones finished first reserve in the 11/12 100m backstroke. All new comers made significant in-roads and are looking forward already to 2008 where they will be in age.

Cam Bell, Brad Carnell and Ben Perrin also delivered the goods with a host of PB's

  • Medal Haul - Gold = 27 , Silver = 9 , Bronze = 12

A Brief History - The Club was formed back in 1996 with just 16 members. We are a vountary run club that relies on the commitment of not just the swimmers, but their parent(s) also. We welcome any parent who wishes to offer their skills, time and effort in order to improve the club. Now in 2006 we have over 110 members, some of which are competing at international levels.
